Case in point, the movement of quiet yet poignant folk artists who have quietly kneaded themselves small deer-like beds in the pastures of today’s music scene. If 80’s hair metal said, “excess over progress,” and “hide it behind the hair”, and 90’s grunge said even if begrudgingly, “it’s ok to be depressed, but keep your feelings to your flannelled self,” then today’s folk music scene says, “Sit and listen to what I have created. You don’t have to dress funny, act outrageously, and be overly depressed or angry. All you have to do is listen as you are.” What a relief.

Recent standout folk releases include Iron and Wine’s beautifully crafted The Shepard’s Dog, Fleet Foxes’ spiritually uplifting self-titled release and Bon Iver’s hushed and rustic For Emma, Forever Ago. Each of these releases features masterful and tasteful musicianship and simply honest songwriting. In the case of Iron and Wine and the Fleet Foxes, you will find skilled multi-instrumentalists who succeed in brushing each track with just enough color. Bon Iver relies more heavily on simple songwriting and instrumentation packed to the gill with uncompromising emotion.

These artists use motifs and themes to tie songs together, and paint vivid pictures in their story telling. This music is engaging not because it is loud and brash, or because it’s the cool thing. This music is simple, honest and relatable. The instrumentation allows listeners to uncover new elements on each listen, and eloquent production keeps the layers from mudding up the sound.

Aaronantivendhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12138355454030644117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1226354168969692199.post-88270706233812704922009-02-16T19:39:00.006-06:002009-02-16T19:47:05.666-06:00Stumpyhorse vs Stumpenhorst: Battle of Battles

Hurry! Go over to the Spylacopa myspace page(www.myspace.com/spylacopa) to check it out and find out how to pick it up without STEALING IT ONLINE SOMEWHERE. Which brings me to the next issue.

You do realize that when you do that, steal music from bands like us, you basically take a big fat unlubed extra ribbed strap on and fuck us all in the ass with it don't you? I used to be way into the whole free downloading thing, because at first it was like yeah awesome free shit we've been paying too much for too long fuck the man blah blah! But now cd prices are reasonable and if it boils down to you not wanting a physical thing because you're only gonna listen on your computer or ipod anyway, at least go over to Itunes and pick the stuff up if you want to own it, it's a dollar per song over there for christ's sake. Intellectual property is still property you know? Think of it like this, if you had a restaurant(you can tell I'm hungry...all this talk of burritos, food, etc), and you sold food that was awesome and that you made yourself and spent shit tons of time on, and people were just pouring in and looting your place and taking everything out of it for free, just stealing everything, would you keep making it? Would it somehow be your fault? What's the solution...to make better food? To somehow give people an incentive to pay for it? Fuck that. You would kill them, or at least beat them, or at the very least criminally charge them. Imagine if you came to our show and came up to our merch table and tried to run off with a cd or shirt. I or our merch guy would run you down and brain you. But nobody would ever do that. People only steal music because it's not a physical thing. It's becoming a tragedy thats making it very hard to be an adult making real music in this day and age, and honestly I'd like to think that if I met each and every one of you in person and shook your hand and talked to you, you would know that I wouldn't steal something from you, and I would like to think that you wouldn't steal from me. I don't give a shit about Britney Spears' new single or Miley Cyrus' new album, because I'm sure they view their fans like a target audience, they are products of their record companies just like the products they are trying to sell, nothing more than a marketing face for a single that's as memorable as it is long. They would never hang with the commoners so to speak, and kick it with their fans, at least not without secretly having to swallow their own vomit from having to waste their time talking with them. We keep it as real as it fucking gets in everything that we do, and try to break down every possible wall in between us and you without all living on Awesome Island together. I see the counts from torrent sites and shit, and it's depressing, and I hope hope hope to god that it's the people on the fringe stealing the music we make, whether its Dillinger or other projects, and that its not the people that write to us on here, and talk to us after shows, people who I've looked in the eye from the stage and shared a moment of mutual respect with, or given a hug after the show, or sang along with in a sweaty hell hole somewhere. I know for a fact that if you saw me stealing from you you would be pretty fucking disappointed. Do your part and don't be that guy, unless you can honestly say that you would walk into my place with no remorse and steal shit from me and wouldn't care if I did the same. If you can say that then fuck it go ahead and download it. Just know that when you take that shit online, especially from bands that are our size who are trying to do something genuine, you aren't sticking it to "the man" anymore. It went beyond that a long time ago. The whole industry is collapsing from the inside out, this shit is like a cancer that is rotting it out from the core, and it is gonna start having huge repercussions on the quality and lifespan of bands. It only contributes to the empty attention deficit culture that we work so hard to fight, to the music culture of here today/gone tomorrow bullshit music. The record companies see that there is no value in investing in bands like us when compared to bands or singers they can manipulate as products/images to get their singles and advertising placements out of, and the people downloading for free generally give way less time to the music they download before they move on to something else, because they didn't make any investment in it. So what does that lead to? People are conditioning themselves to only have the mental capacity to enjoy simple sugary bullshit that wears off after a couple of listens, and they're conditioning the industry to give that to them. Do you think that it's a coincidence that the quality of mainstream music has fell off of a cliff compared to any other time in history? Remember when there were bands that were big that were actually genuinely awesome? A lot of them? Bands and artists that in the retrospect of music history are both massively popular and massively "good"? There's a direct corrolation between downloading and the lack of quality in the larger musical landscape. People in our scene are afraid to say this shit because they think that some kid is gonna say that they aren't "punk rock" anymore. That whole "stealing is punk rock" thing is a huge crock of shit that people hide behind to try to wash their hands and absolve themselves of their responsibility for aiding in the eventual destruction of the artists they claim to love. I'm just letting you know the reality of the situation, from someone who still gives a shit about music as an artform not just a commodity, sitting in the middle of this industry watching it happen. I'm giving it to you as real as it gets without being worried about looking punk rock at all, because I've taken guitars to the fucking face and have fake teeth in my mouth to show for it and i've held broken bones together with duct tape until they healed because of not having medical insurance and I've lived in places that made the fight club house look like a Beverly Hills mansion, in total poverty for a large part of my adult life, all to do my part to keep The Dillinger Escape Plan and music that we believe in rolling because we have true belief in what we are doing, so I don't give two shits about whether someone thinks I'm not punk rock because I don't want my shit stolen. Ben, who has more time and releases under his belt than me and whose body in an MRI looks like it was mashed in a trash compactor all because of this lifestyle too, just said something to me that's very true, that when people download our shit for free its like if they walked into a mom and pop store that had one of a kind shit, and there were no employees there and no security, and it was all self checkout lines, and instead of paying they just walked out with everything they wanted. Would those people then complain when the store closed and say it was the man's fault? Probably."

(taken from a blog written by DEP's Greg Puciato)antivendhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12138355454030644117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1226354168969692199.post-83688182636532632402008-11-06T19:47:00.004-06:002008-11-06T19:51:42.806-06:00ReadThis is a copy and paste from Deftones' blog ...

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

Chi
Hello Everyone,

It deeply saddens me to inform you all that our brother Chi Cheng was involved in a terrible car accident last night. Two days ago we had a spare half hour to spend in Rome before heading to the venue, so we decided to go see the Coliseum. We parked nearby and went to take a brief twenty minute walk around the area. When we returned to our van we found that it had been broken into, despite being parked on a major street in broad daylight. Four bags were stolen, the contents including computers, passports, wallets, ipods, our soundguy's microphone collection, and, most devastatingly, a number of personal journals and two portable recording devices containing hours of song ideas that are now lost forever.

The calculated loss of this theft is several thousands of dollars. Unfortunately our band only earns us a very meager living and some of us are already in the hole from years of trying to make a living as musicians. This incident therefore poses a devastating loss and puts us in a very compromised financial position. Although we realize that there is a worldwide financial crisis going on, if there are those of you who have the means and desire to help out our gratitude would run deeper than words could express. We've set up a Paypal account at the address pelicanrobbed@gmail.com. Anything you can offer, even simple condolences, would go a long way. Thanks so much for reading."antivendhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12138355454030644117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1226354168969692199.post-41288894251460143702008-09-25T19:50:00.005-05:002008-09-25T19:52:21.249-05:00Veggie dogs and free ice creamHaving trouble deciding whom to vote for? Today, The Greater Force is smiling. He is smiling because it is “Just by Chance Friday.” You see, every third Friday The Greater Force spends the afternoon making, or letting decisions be made purely on chance. Since all else is so carefully crafted with loving detail—and a little deceit and trickery—this is The Greater Force’s chance to sit back and let 'em fly!

On the other side of the desk sits The Greater Force’s A.A., or Administrative Assistant. He is also smiling because “Just by Chance Friday” is the only day he really gets to be involved in much decision, or not decision making. The Greater Force doesn’t really need an A.A.; he just saw it on TV and thought he should have one too.

For this edition of “Just by Chance Friday,” The Greater Force has decided to assemble a band. He will use several pairs of dice, custom made for this one of a kind act. One die will be stamped with the names of six instruments, including vocals, and will be rolled first. Then one of six other die with six accomplished and marketable musicians will be rolled. Confused? Well so was the A.A.

“Just roll the instrument dice,” The Greater Force asked after trying to explain the process with several techniques he learned at a recent communications workshop, “and I promise it will make sense.”

The A.A. rolled the instrument die and ‘Vocals’ was the first position to be filled.

“Now roll this die that is stamped with the names of six accomplished and marketable lead vocalists and we will have our lead singer.”

“Oh, is that it?” said the A.A., “Next time you should just start with a demonstration. I’m more of a visual learner.”

The Greater Force smiled at his AA thinking things no Greater Force should think.

The A.A. rolled the ‘Vocals’ die and the name Zach de la Rocha appeared. The A.A., so overcome with the excitement of his first real contribution to modern music, broke into a rendition of the old Mexican standard “La cucaracha” but with Zach de la Rocha’s name instead of La cucaracha.

The Greater Force laughed at his A.A. The rumblings of his laugh were reportedly felt as far down as the 75th floor.

The Greater Force then asked his A.A. to roll the instrument die again. He did and ‘Drums’ would be the next position to fill. While The Greater Force sat up to his desk and did a drum roll with his hands—an act that both of them found extremely amusing—the A.A. rolled the die stamped with accomplished and marketable drummers. The name Jon Theodore appeared before them. The A.A. had no idea who Jon Theodore was but the name seemed to affect The Greater Force. He sat back in his leather bound chair and thought. The A.A. could tell The Greater Force was bothered by something, but didn’t want the fun to end so he picked up the instrument die and prepared to roll it.

“Stop,” The Greater Force said.

As he sat there this is what he was thinking. “The idea of just these two playing together is great. No one will see it coming, and just the thought will no doubt make many cringe in anticipation. But is it right? Is the world ready for the hip-hop-rock duo?”

And so it was.

The recently released EP from super-duo One Day as a Lion explodes with angry lip work by Zach de la Rocha and heavy beats courtesy of Jon Theodore. This album is about as far from over-produced as possible which preserves the raw anger associated with all things Zach de la Rocha. There are a few tracks that could benefit from a nice meaty bass line, such as “Wild International”, and a few that work nicely with a couple keyboard tracks and drums. The most successful track here is undoubtedly the title track. A simple keyboard loop with sparse bass like key-work dominates the tune. Brought together with a solid beat by Theodore and you have recipe that really works for this duo. Although all of these songs could feasibly appear on a Rage Against the Machine album, the unique buzz-drone keyboard work and singing from Zach de la Rocha gives this collection its own identity. While Jon Theodore’s drumming does the music justice, his signature sound is heard only briefly in “Last Letter.” Listeners coming to hear the fanatic chaos Theodore brought to The Mars Volta may be disappointed but should remain patient. Hopefully this EP is only the beginning and an LP and live dates are in the works.

On the whole, it seems One Day as a Lion may be more about the messages found in de la Rocha’s lyrics than the music. From religion, war and peace, socio-economics and politics, all of de la Rocha’s usual themes are present. Without distractions such as virtuoso guitar playing, de la Rocha’s punishingly honest and relevant lyrics are impossible to ignore. You get the idea de la Rocha cares little about industry standards or perceived success, and is using this group’s hype simply as a means to say what he feels is important.

Don't forget, kiddies ...

antivendhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12138355454030644117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1226354168969692199.post-398828944334765342008-09-05T22:52:00.005-05:002008-09-08T15:12:48.100-05:00Sketchbooks and scissorsSonnenzimmer's Poster Pile Up!
Sunday, September 7th, 2-7pm.

antivendhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12138355454030644117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1226354168969692199.post-56757980724298664582008-09-04T09:00:00.009-05:002008-09-04T10:27:13.384-05:00Scrap paper and bubble gumOh Aye has just released a new skateboard deck design.
